As one of the three great competitions of the Austrian Universities of Music and Dramatic Arts, "Franz Schubert and the Music of Modern Times" of Graz remains a chamber music competition by its nature. As chamber music qualities will be in the center of interest. Lied and String Quartet are the given categories of the competitions three categories. The 3rd one alternates every three years.
The essential feature of this competition is the contrasting of modern and traditional music. The traditional repertory is seen under new light, the musician's view being more open for its structures, and at the same time the new becomes more evident by contrasting it with tradition. With Schubert, a very intensive way of making music is asked for.
